Update on Ruchill Park volunteering

Views from the flagpole

As a result of the formation of the Friends of Ruchill Park, the Council has cleared the overgrown vegetation at the top of the Flagpole Hill. After many years we again have a 360 degree vista – with Cathkin Braes and Gleniffer to the south, the Kilpatrick Hills and Ben Lomond to the west, the Campsies to the north, and Garngad and Blackhill to the east.

A group of 15 volunteers worked in an area of woodland which had become very overgrown and entangled. It has been being used as a drinking den. We cut sightlines through it so that people walking along the paths can see into it.

We made a clearing in the centre to be used by nursery schools in the area as a woodland classroom. The Council had sliced trees which had been blown over in the storm and we used these slices to provide seating in the woodland classroom.

It was pretty strenuous! But there was a variety of supervised tasks to suit all abilities, from litter picking to sawing branches.

People from Ruchill Community Council joined us and one person came from Possilpark. Community Payback had a squad in the park the same day, scraping the edges of paths that had narrowed due to mud, moss and grass. They would be working the following day, too.
