On our May walk to the aqueduct

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our notice board.

About the walk

The walk is 6.4 km (4 miles) and involves 70 metres of climb over the entire walk.

We cross Maryhill Road twice at controlled crossings and Craighall Road twice, but only one of these is at a controlled crossing. Craighall Road can be quite busy with traffic as it is part of the direct route from Balmore Road into the City Centre. However, there are traffic lights at various places which break up the traffic flow and there are reasonably long periods when there is time to cross comfortably. From where we will cross there are good lines of sight in both directions. We also cross St George's Road, but there is a signalised crossing.

Route in detail

Queen Margaret Drive, Kelvinside Avenue, cross Maryhill Road at the Fire Station and either go to the canal towpath from there or continue along Maryhill Road to North Park St and join the canal towpath there.

We go along the towpath to Claypits Bridge and cross it then turn east to the Scottish Canals HQ. From there, we pass in front of the Whisky Bond and National Theatre of Scotland and go straight on to Craighall Road.

We cross Craighall Road and enter Borron St and follow it round the foot of the hill, then turn right into Harvy St which takes us on to Dundas Hill.

For the return, we descend via Vintner St to North Canal Bank, then head west to Speirs Wharf. From there we descend the steps or the path and turn right at Civic House and cross the footbridge over Garscube Road.

We follow the path past Abercorn School, then through Braid Square and cross St George's Road. We go down North Woodside Road, cross Maryhill Road and continue to Mount St, where we turn right and continue to Raeberry St. We turn left and, at the mini-roundabout go to Striven Gardens and then via Doune Gardens, Doune Quadrant and Queen Margaret Road and back to our start.
