Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our notice board.

About the walk

The distance is 5.6km (3.5 miles) and should take 1.5 hours or so.

The two main safety issues are:
  1. Crossing main roads – we will cross more than usual on this walk: Great Western Road, Byres Road/Highburgh Road (diagonally), Dumbarton Road, Old Dumbarton Road, Argyle St and Sauchiehall St. All except Old Dumbarton Road are signalised.
  2. Low light level in places due to tree canopies – this requires attention in sections where the path surface is irregular: within Yorkhill Park and on sections of the Kelvin Walkway.

Route in detail

The route will take us south down Queen Margaret Drive, across Maryhill Road and on to Byres Road. After crossing University Avenue, we will cross Byres Road and continue south down the new widened pavement to Dumbarton Road, which we cross.

We join Cooper's Well St and continue south a short distance, then turn left into Benalder St and across the Kelvin, to Old Dumbarton Road, which we cross and go right, down Ferry Road. We then turn left at Centurion Way and go uphill.

The park is behind the new buildings on the left. We go between the first two blocks and join a footpath and turn right.

We continue for the full length of the path, past the swing park and the small vegetable garden and emerge at Sandyford St opposite the former Kelvinhaugh Primary School.

We turn left then right into Gilbert St, which continues as Haugh Road, past the Amadiyya Mosque and reach Argyle St.
We cross Argyle St into Radnor St, then across Sauchiehall St into Kelvin Way.

Just after the bandstand, we turn right into Kelvingrove Park and go past the statue of Thomas Carlyle and across the Kelvin.

Immediately after crossing the bridge, we turn left and follow the path alongside the river (The Kelvin Walkway) and continue along it, crossing the Kelvin again at the Flint Mill, then along towards Queen Margaret Bridge.

Just before QM Bridge we turn right and go up the path to Queen Margaret Road and the end of the walk.
