NKCC health walk

Join us on Saturday, 17 August 2024, for our Hidden Spaces walk. We will walk to the gardens on the roof at the Dundasvale Court flats via the St Columba's Catholic Church (designed by Gillespie Kidd and Coia), Arches DIY skatepark and Civic House before returning via the canal and then via the Mackintosh Church and the Braeside Street Garden. It is 6.13km/3.81 miles and should take 1.5 hours or so.

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our notice board.

Access/safety

The route is all on paths or pavements and can be adapted to be step free (although there are some kerbs without dropped edges).

The Arches DIY is a DIY skatepark with some areas under construction so the area could be hazardous, it is uneven underfoot, there may be loose materials and broken glass. You do not need to enter the space (you can get views through the gate) and if you do choose to do so we ask you to be careful.

Please dress for the weather and you may wish to bring drinking water.

There are cafes on Queen Margaret Drive where we start and end and public toilets nearby in the Botanic Gardens. We will also pass several cafes on Maryhill Road when we are on the return leg of the journey.

Route

Walk down Doune Quadrant on Doune Gardens and then onto Raeberry Street.

Walk along to Maryhill Road and cross at the lights. Walk along Trossachs Street and then Ancroft Street where we will see the church.

Then onto Hopehill Road, Callendar Street, Barr Street and then Garscube Road. We will cross at the lights and then onto Farnell Street and Burns Street, then Sawmillfield Street (where we will find Arches DIY).

From there we will walk along Edington Street, Corn Street, Civic Street (where we will find Civic House) and then onto the path under the motorway to the Dundasvale flats where I’d like to either go up the steps or ramp to explore the rooftop garden and community space.

From there we will cross back under the motorway and climb up either the steps or slope to the canal.

We will then walk back along the canal until we get to the slide and then we will come down onto Garscube Road, Maryhill Road and then past some local sights: the Mackintosh Church, Jaconellis, the Braeside Street Garden. We will cross the road, onto Lyndhurst Gardens and then along Wilton Street back to the start.

Registration

There is no need to book – you can just come along on the day.

However, if you haven’t done so already, it would be helpful if you could record your participation by entering your data on this registration link. (This needs to be done only once.)
