NKCC health walk

Our next walk will be on Saturday, 31 August 2024, to Bingham's Pond and Gartnavel Hospital grounds via the terraces on the north side of Great Western Road on the outward journey and via the terraces on the south side on the return.

This walk is 6.7km (4.2 miles) and should take around 1¾ hours.

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our notice board.

The route in detail

We will enter the Botanics at the rear of the Kibble Palace and exit on Great Western Road. We can access Kirklee Terrace by a long set of steps, but, if this is unsuitable for some we can continue on Great Western Road to Kirklee Road, cross and enter Lowther Terrace, just to the rear of the shop on the corner.

We continue on the terraces – Redlands and Lancaster – and cross Cleveden Road to join Beaconsfield Road (which is also a terrace). Some of the slabs on the path are loose and rock a bit, so watch your footing!

This brings us to Great Western Road opposite the entrance to Gartnavel. We cross and enter the hospital grounds, take the first right past the hotel – Shelley Road – and reach Bingham's Pond.

We do a circuit of the pond and rejoin Shelley Road for a short distance to reach the grounds of Gartnavel Royal Hospital. There are signed paths which we follow taking us down to the garden area for patients' use.

We join the road parallel to the railway and continue round the perimeter, eventually returning to the gate on Great Western Road. We turn right past Hughenden playing fields and then on to Devonshire Terrace and Devonshire Gardens.

We cross Hyndland Road and join Lancaster Terrace, Great Western Terrace (steps or ramp), Belhaven Terrace West, cross Horselethill Road, then Belhaven Terrace, Kew Terrace and Grosvenor Terrace and reach the top of Byres Road. We cross and re-enter the Botanics, exiting on Queen Margaret Road at the Bridge.

When we have circled Bingham's Road, there is the option of omitting the circuit of the hospital grounds. This reduces the distance by 1.5 km (1 mile).
