Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our notice board.
About Hamiltonhill
Hamiltonhill is in Possil just north of The Claypits. Queen's Cross Housing Association, with support from Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government is building an 'eco' estate of social housing in an area which has been unused for many years. The estate contains a number of parkland areas with children's play areas, sculptures, planted areas and seating and is accessible to people of all mobilities. The parkland areas are largely complete, although sections are fenced to allow planting to develop. They were opened officially by the Lord Provost in the middle of April.
Route
We will head north of QMD and then along Kelvinside Avenue to the Fire Station. We cross Maryhill Road and go up to the canal towpath and head east to the Nolly Brig.
We go up on to Firhill Road, cross it and cross the canal and turn right into Panmure Gate, which runs along the canal to the north of Firhill Basin.
We follow the path towards the Claypits and come to a set up steps on the left which takes us up Hamiltonhill. This is straight uphill for about 250 metres. It's a mixture of stairs and footpath and will get the heart and lungs pumping! This takes us to the top of the Claypits.
We cross Ellesmere St and enter Stoneyhurst Street, then first left at Auckland St and enter the first parkland area off it. We will follow the paths round the park areas and eventually return to Stoneyhurst St.
We will cross and enter Derwent St into the next development area at Cardalvan St. We follow the paths around it and return to Ellesmere St (but downhill and further east). We go down Ellesmere St and turn first right at a short footpath which leads to Applecross St and the Scottish Canals HQ.
We cross the canal and turn right and walk to the Claypits Bridge then down the zigzag path to Garscube Road and head west towards Queen's Cross. We cross both Garscube Road and Maryhill Road here and then turn right, then turn first left to Kirkland St, then right into Dalmally St, left into Lyndhurst Gardens and, finally, right into Wilton St.
We walk to the end of Wilton St to its junction with QMD and the end of the walk.
